Popular actress Nagma turns to Jesus Christ

POPULAR South Indian actress Nagma is now a Christian.

The actress, who ruled the roost in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films from 1993 to 1997, revealed about the transformation in her life while speaking at a prayer meeting for film artistes organized in Vijay Park Hotel, Chennai by Jesus Redeems Ministries founder Bro. Mohan C. Lazarus. Many film personalities including director Prabhu Solomon, actors Chinni Jayanth and Junior Balaiah attended the meeting.

At the meeting, she is said to have told the gathering that she is ready to preach the Gospel in every city and town that the Lord takes her to. According to reports, the actress shared her testimony and wowed the audience with her knowledge of the Bible at the meeting.

She said that her life style forced her to attempt suicide and hence she sought the help of the Lord.

Nagma told the gathering that Jesus Christ was the only super star in her life. Earlier, she made a reference to her acting career where she had paired as the leading lady with several actors in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Bhojpuri films.

The actress, who dabbled in politics briefly, said a copy of the Bible that she got when she was depressed and contemplating suicide saved her from killing herself. All her problems, she said, started fading away one by one after she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour.

Nagma was born Namratha Sadhana in an ordinary Muslim family in Punjab. She debuted in a Hindi film titled 'Baaghi' in which she acted along with Salman Khan. She shot to fame in south India when she was paired with Tamil superstar Rajnikant in 'Basha'. 'Kadhalan', where she acted along with Prabhu Deva, was another blockbuster film. Some of her major hits in Telugu were 'Gharana Mogudu' with Chiranjeevi in 1993, 'Allari Alludu' with Nagarjuna and 'Major Chandrakanth' with N. T. Rama Rao and Mohan Babu.

For a brief while, Nagma was part of “Art of living” course. The actress is currently a major star in Bhojpuri movies where she found success as a leading lady. She was successful when paired against "Big boss" reality show participant Ravi Kishen.

In troubled times, celebrities have often sought solace in Christianity. Here are a few examples:

Deepa
Deepa alias Unni Mary, a Christian by birth made it big in Kollywood in the late 70s and starred opposite Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. However, a misguided attempt at starting her own production company with the film Kalayana Paravaigal where she played the protagonist, led to a financial mess. An unsuccessful political stint and marital discord led her to attempt suicide. She subsequently said that she would renounce worldly possessions and turn a Christian preacher.

Shakila
The actress who gave a run to biggies like Mammootty and Mohan Lal with her soft porn Malayalam films, at one stage was fed up of life and men and even went to the extent of becoming a Christian nun after she had the chance to act as a nun in a film.

Nagesh
The yesteryear comedian from Kollywood was a Brahmin by birth, who converted to Christianity and changed his name to Joseph after he faced a major set back in his family life which led to his hospitalization.

AVM Rajan
The famous actor from the 70s, Rajan was born as a Hindu. At one stage, when he was left with no films, he produced Oorum Uravum a Sivaji Ganesan - starrer, which was box office disaster. Well Praise God for his Grace in transforming life. I just would like to add that we have to give space to people with such creativity in utilizing their talents. South Indian Christian movement has nearly banned their believers from the Theatre/Film movements. We should utilize their creativity.
